Subject: [GMCnet] GMCtalk address change
From: Ken Burton <n9cv@comcast.net>
Date: Wed, 15 Jun 2005 02:59:28 -0500

The GMCtalk server address has changed.  The old one will also work for a few weeks but will soon disappear.  We have been on continuously for the last 4 hours and both addresses just fine.  There were still some people on it when I dropped off at 2:45 AM Central time to type this note.

Here is the new address:

eQSO.wirelessbeehive.com

Everything else remains the same.  The port is still 500, the password is still GMC, and we are usually in room 101.  Any version of eQSO software works here.

Another place we sometime hang out is:  server.eqso.net , port 10024, room 1USA, no password required.  The talk on this server is not always GMC and we get a lot of foreign visitors.  You will need to have the newer version 2 software to access this server.  If you need Version 2, it is available free at www.eQSO.org .

August 23, 2004 update

System Background

GMCtalk is an Internet based audio distribution system that provides audio conferencing between multiple concurrent users. The audio quality is far superior to normal telephone conversations and can be used for interactive voice conferencing or the broadcast of seminar type audio. Tom Burke and Ken Burton have been looking for a few months for a free Internet based system that would allow GMC owners to discuss subjects related to their GMC motorhomes. We decided to use a product named eQSO.

This software was written by M0ZPD (a ham) in Great Britain. Hams around the world use eQSO to communicate with each other using the Internet and Internet attached RF links. Recently it was decided that under FCC rules non-hams could be allowed to use the Internet eQSO servers in 2-way Internet or 1-way RF link listen only modes. eQSO is similar in function to Echolink or IRLP that you may have seen or heard of in the past.
Based on the above FCC rules for non-hams, Tom Burke and I (Ken Burton) decided to setup a standalone server. GMC owners and interested parties can now share verbal information without violating the FCC and Industry Canada no-RF rules.
There is a small piece of software called eQSO client that you need to download to use GMCtalk. This software runs on Windows Operating Systems only.

Software Installation and Setup

3. Go to web site www.eQSO.org <http://www.eqso.org/>

4. 2. Click on the line (in blue) "The eQSO software downloads"

5. On the next screen click on the words "Download Win98 / ME / XP / 2K"

6. In the window that opens click on "save"

7. On the open dialog box save this file in the sub-directory of your choice. I made and used a directory called “eQSO client”.

8. When the download is finished click on the "open" box.

9. On the next window titled Setup click on "yes".

10. Follow the normal Windows program installation routine. An installation wizard opens and walks you through the installation process.

11. At the end of the installation the eQSO window opens up.
a. In the server box type “205.163.7.254 ” (without the quotes)
b. In the port box type “500
c. In the Server box type “GMC
d. In the room number enter "101"

If this is the first time you have signed on, type SWL in the "Call sign / Comment" box and the system will assign you a number.

The following note was added on 7-26-04 for existing users only:

We moved the GMCtalk service to the GMC Seminar server. The GMCtalk server is down of an undetermined length of time. Until further notice, please use the GMC Seminar server at: 205.163.7.254, Port 500, password GMC. Please note that this is a hidden server and it will not be displayed on the "Who's on the system" screen. You must have the above information to connect to it. This is the same server information used previously for the GMC Eastern States rally broadcasts and other seminars. If you have questions or problems please contact Ken Burton, Bill McGee, Jim Melberg, Paul Bartz, or John Brewer.

10. Next install your microphone or headset. Talk into the microphone and watch the vertical bar on the screen. Adjust the slider to the right for the highest you can get in the green without going in the red. An occasional single bar in the red is OK. If you go to two bars it makes very disturbing clicks to the listeners.

You are now ready to connect.

Connection and Communication
1. Click on “Connect” and you should be connected to the GMCtalk server.

2. If any one is talking, adjust your receive volume by moving the slider under the Output column.

3. When you are ready to talk CLICK AND HOLD the PTT (Push to Talk) Box on the screen. When you are done un-Click the PTT. Alternatively you may press and hold down the space bar for PTT.

Note: To start this program from scratch later after it is installed:
1. Close (or minimize) all windows and go to the desktop.
2. Click on the “eQSO” Icon on the desktop to start the software.

Server Information
The server currently in operation for GMCtalk users and GMC Seminar users is 205.163.7.254, (port 500), password GMC. This server is intended for Internet connections only (No RF).

Hams hams and non-hams (SWLs) can use it at any time. If anyone connects to this server with a –L or –R suffix call sign (which indicates an RF user) it is the responsibility of that connecting RF user and not the SWL in the room to assure nothing goes out over he air at his site while connect to the GMCtalk server.
There is one default conference room called “101”. We assume that most connections to GMCtalk will be to this conference room. You, as a user, can at any time start additional conference rooms by typing the room description or number of your choice in the room block on your client software screen. You will be sent your newly created room where others can meet you.

Operation Rules

1. NO PROFANITY no matter how minor. This is not CB!!

2. If you are an SWL-xxxx DO NOT PUSH THE PTT BUTTON if there is anyone attached to your conference room with a –L or –R on the end of their call sign. This will not be an issue on the GMCtalk server as we intend it for non-RF connections only. It is an issue on other servers that you might see and decide to use on the network.

See Who’s On the System

There is one button we did not talk about. It is named “See Who’s on the system”. If you get adventurous, click on it. A new program called “eQSO SYSTEM Monitor” will open. This is a worldwide directory of all of the servers and users currently using eQSO. This directory is updated every 60 seconds.

The top server in the list is called “Server.eQSO.net”. It is a huge server with almost unlimited bandwidth located in Dallas, TX. Under that server you will see a list of open conference rooms hosted by the K5JD server in Dallas. Feel free to listen to any of them that you want. Some are foreign languages only. PLEASE REMEMBER NO PTT if you are an SWL and there is any call sign with a –R or –L suffix currently attached to the room you are visiting. Doing so on the first offense will get you locked out of the system for 1 hour. On the 3rd offense you will be permanently banned.

Note:
You will NOT find our server (GMCtalk / GMCseminar) listed. Our server is hidden from the general ham and SWL user population. You must have the above address and password to sign-on to GMCtalk.

If you highlight an entry in "See Who's on the System" and click on the “Connect to selected Room” (at the top), you will be connected to ththat server and room directly.

Another note:
It should be noted at this time that the main K5JD server now requires the user to run Version 2.0 client software. If you just downloaded the client software you are at Version 2.0 or higher. Earlier users like myself do not have Version 2.0 loaded. We do not plan to upgrade our server to require Version 2.0, so any version of the client code will work to access our server (and also most of the other servers ones you see listed under "Who's on the system").
